Posturology? Is It Even Real?

Whether you’re lifting, running, doing the dishes, watching Netflix, or just trying to sleep without waking up in a full-body question mark, I believe posture plays a role. In fact, I boil it down to this: Posture matters every time we move—or don’t.

But wait, isn’t posture just about standing up straight and flexing your abs? Love that question—and here’s a big, juicy NO. Posture isn’t just a “don’t slouch” rule. It’s active 24/7 and tells the story of how we’re doing—physically, emotionally, neurologically. It’s shaped by everything from your emotions, reflexes, and vision to your digestion, past injuries, and immune system function. (Yeah… it’s a lot more than sitting up straight at your desk.)

So, you’re saying I don’t actually control my posture? Jajaja (laughs in Spanish)—not really. Think of posture like a time capsule. What you feed into it (or don’t) gets stored, and eventually, it shows up—especially when you start feeling pain doing the simplest things like sitting, sleeping, or just existing. That’s when I start digging into how your body actually moves, stands, lifts, jumps—you name it.

Then I test the three big posture pillars:

  1. Mobility – how well can you move?

  2. Stability – how well can you control that movement?

  3. Strength – how much force can you bring to the table while doing both?

When these three are in balance, your body feels more like a well-oiled machine and less like a squeaky shopping cart. But if one is off—or completely missing—things get tight, slow, and sore.

Our job is to help you find your balance between these three, specific to your needs. Whether you’ve got hypermobility, stiffness, chronic pain, or you’re just trying to feel better squatting without your knees staging a protest, there’s always something we can work with. Your body is ridiculously smart—and ridiculously worth investing in.

So… what is posture, really? It’s your body’s built-in defense system. It’s a reflection of how adaptive and protective your nervous system is. Your posture is doing its best to preserve you—even if that means recruiting your neck to help out your hips (not ideal, but hey, it’s trying). Ever wondered if Batman gets tired? Same. Your posture is your unsung superhero. Maybe it’s time to give it a little backup.

Working at ROOTS helped me go even deeper into understanding posture in every context—from deadlifts to downtime. Thanks for reading a little about how I see the body. My goal is always the same: help you understand your body and feel like a rockstar in it.
